I feel like "AM a rather elderly man" (Melville 1) after writing this.
I am not a writer or an English major, instead, I chose to study the other ignored field of fine art, art education in particular. the final portfolio due for writing 106 was the most difficult thing I had to complete academically...well except for my required one semester of math(which I surprisingly passed). Therefore, I do not believe this class should have a final to attend in class mostly because the portfolio is are final. To prepare for this assignment I had to schedule multiple meetings at the writing center and pull multiple all-nighters. I would learn nothing from having to go in after I have handed in my portfolio when I have to be preparing for other finals. As this is a required course it is one of the most important sections in the school, but since its a writing class and students have spent the semester writing papers and then creating a final portfolio, what would be the point of a final block day? A lot of aspects to what we call college does not make sense to me and other students, I pay a lot of money, I will never have, to learn and gain experience for my future, therefore it will be a waste of my unowned money to drag my stressed and tired self to an uninformative day of class. Gladly, we were able to participate in a vote during class, thanks to an understanding professor, and decide whether a class should be held or not. I was worried a few would raise there hands in order to work on their portfolio in class, as I understand, but when it came time to vote no one's hand even twitched. I found this amusing since the school decided that having a mandatory final block period in writing was a good idea, but no one else seems to think so. I often wonder if those in charge of colleges, even some professors, if they actually attended college themselves. But overall I learned a lot from just writing for my assignments and from a professor who I can tell actually attended college, a lot of it.
