The Purpose of Literature

There are various forms of literature including, poems, non-fiction, fiction, and many others. Each written text usually includes an initial purpose, to entertain, inform or educate. During middle school and high school, I did not have a huge interesting in reading. I discovered that I do not enjoy reading when it is assigned. I rarely found the books chosen for the curriculum to be interesting. During the summer I would bring a book to the beach, by the pool, or anywhere outdoors. Instead of reading the required intellectual novel I would grab a fiction book transforming the literal world into this hypothetical world. The words turned to images as if I was watching a movie, creating characters and their environments. Fiction books acted and still acts as a distraction of everyday life. The teachers I had in the past seemed to be more concerned about the grades and assignments rather than the reading. Out of twenty students, about half would even attempt to open to book. I often looked up summaries to retain the important information for the intended quiz. I would rather appreciate the literature and study its words and understand their meanings.  I still struggle with the important skill of informative and educational writing rather than fictional. My intentions in this class are to improve this aspect of my writing.
